ECHO Program (Engaging Community Help in Outreach)
An ecumenical program We are a coalition of congregations. Our interfaith program is built on congregations committing to working together to lift up those in our community who struggle to remain independent. Our volunteers come from member congregations and the community at large. They come from all faiths, Baha'i, Buddhist, Christian, Jewish, Unitarian and nondenominational faiths. We build lasting relationships. The ECHO representative from our church is Deborah O'Brien, who can be emailed at . ECHO focuses on three different areas: the HFL GED (Honeoye Falls-Lima General Equivalency Diploma) Program, the Lets Get Moving Program (a walking program for congregations) and the Men Encouraging Men's Health Program. HFL GED Program The GED Program continues to be the last, best hope for the many young people in the community who have struggled and failed within the normal system of education. This program is a collaborative partnership between the faith-based organization, Engaging Community Help in Outreach (ECHO) and the Honeoye Falls-Lima Central School District, with the Director of Pupil Services overseeing the academic components of the program. The high school provides a tutor and ECHO provides classroom space, volunteer mentors, and support for the case management services. The program has targeted high school drop-outs, teens and adults, from the Honeoye Falls-Lima District and surrounding areas. For the year 2005, the program had a total of 22 students enrolled. During the year, nine of these students graduated. Of the remaining students, three are prepared to take the final exam, five continue to be study in the program, and five students have withdrawn. Men Encouraging Men's Health Program This program has its roots with an ecumenical group of men who meet regularly to discuss men's health issues and to identify books and websites relating to specific health topics. In 2005 this group completed a survey about men's health in local churches, sponsored a booth at Village Days and sponsored a successful public education forum on prostate cancer that was attended by 52 people. A second forum on cardiovascular health is planned for this coming April. For more information about this program, you are encouraged to contact Pastor Val Fowler at or John Hoffman at Previous ECHO Programs Since 2001, Gail Richeson served as our Faith Community Nurse and addressed the needs of our congregation and our community. This position was sponsored by our church and the ECHO (Engaging Community Help in Outreach) Program. In December 2005, Gail resigned from this position so that she could assume similar responsibilities with Partners in Caring/Faith in Action, which is now part of the Lifespan Organization. Those in need of care previously provided by Gail are encouraged to contact our pastor, Val Fowler. Some needs may be met by ECHO, Partners in Caring/Faith in Action, or by the Caregivers Support Ministry. |
