Honeoye Falls and Greater Rochester, New York

Honeoye Falls

Named for the waterfall in the center of town, Honeoye Falls is a small village located thirteen miles southeast of Rochester, NY. Honeoye Falls shares a school district with Mendon and Lima, with a total district population of about 10,000. Most area residents consider these three towns to be one larger community. Many residents are active in the arts, joining the accomplished community band and community chorus or volunteering to help out during the high school plays and musicals. This family-oriented community can also be found attending various sporting events around town. Mendon Ponds Park, located a few miles from Honeoye Falls, is a popular place for skiing and sledding in the winter and jogging and canoeing in the summer.

Small businesses have flourished in town for many years and renovations of the old mill buildings have allowed new businesses to move in. The Honeoye Falls Fire Department, made up of volunteers from the community, boasts the ownership of the Iron Fireman. The Iron Fireman, a symbol of fire fighting excellence in days past, had been stolen, recovered and stolen again by various community fire departments. It now resides on the towering steeple of Village Hall.

The Rochester Area

Rochester is the 79th largest city in the United States and the third-largest urban area in New York State. In 1998, Rochester was one of ten communities in the nation to receive the All-America City Award as a great place to live. According to 1990 census figures, Rochester has a city population of 231,636. Monroe County which has a population of 713,968, though the 1,062,470 metropolitan population of Monroe County and six adjacent counties is often used to reflect the true population of the area.

Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, GeVa Theatre, the George Eastman House, and the Rochester Broadway Theater League's Auditorium Theater are just some of the ways Rochestarians access the arts. Rochester hosts the Red Wings minor league baseball team, the Raging Rhinos soccer team, the Americans or "Amerks" hockey team, and the Knighthawks lacrosse team. Eastman Kodak Co., Xerox Corp. and Bausch & Lomb Inc. and hundreds of smaller companies are headquartered in Rochester. Local colleges and universities include the University of Rochester, Rochester Institute of Technology, St. John Fisher College, Nazareth College, Roberts Wesleyan College, and the Colgate Rochester Divinity School. There are several major hospitals, including Strong Memorial Hospital, Genesee Hospital, and Highland Hospital. Rochester was the site of the 1995 Ryder Cup and is an annual site on the LPGA tour. Just south of Lake Ontario, Rochester is a short drive from the scenic Finger Lakes area.
